There may be times, however, when something goes wrong and we are suddenly without the hot water that we really need. Troubleshooting hot water heater problems does not necessarily need to be something that is difficult, but it does require that you look at the problem that you are having objectively. If you have a little bit of mechanical know-how, you would be surprised with exactly how easy it is to fix one of these hot water heaters.
Troubleshooting Hot Water Heater Problems
There may be a number of different issues that would make it a necessity for troubleshooting hot water heater problems. Some of the most common of these would include
- no hot water
- inadequate hot water
- a foul smell coming from the hot water supply
- various noises that your hot water heater may be making.
It might make a difference, as well, as to whether your hot water heater is run by gas or if it is run by electric. Make sure that you understand the operating behind the hot water heater before you try to take on any troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting Hot Water Heater Problems Because Of Age
If you have an old residential hot water heater that is no longer putting out hot water, it might be an easier thing for you to change it rather than to start troubleshooting hot water heater problems and making the problem worse. Residential hot water heaters are one of the easiest items in the house to change, and they are also one of the least expensive. It may be possible that your hot water heater is leaking, along with not producing the heat that is necessary. If that is the case, it is more than likely that your hot water heater is simply too old and it has rusted through. Replacement may be your only option.

- If you have a residential gas hot water heater, make sure that you turn the gas pilot control valve to the pilot setting or perhaps turn off the gas supply altogether from the source.
If you have a strange odor coming from the hot water heater, it is probably from a buildup of bacteria. Flush the hot water heater and rinse it with a solution of hydrogen peroxide in order to kill the bacteria. After refilling the tank, make sure to allow the hot water to run constantly for 10 minutes in order to remove any residual hydrogen peroxide. If the hot water heater is making popping noises, it may be because it is a bit old and sediment has built up inside of the tank, causing the water to boil. Flush the hot water heater and that should solve the problem.
